Relationship Communication Reset

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking about ways to improve your relationship communication. If you’re needing to catch up, you can watch the videos from the past 2 blogs below:

Courageous Conversation

Courageous conversation is the process that leads to authentic communication and it is one of the keys to creating successful relationships. When I talk about having courageous conversations, I'm really talking about the importance of being able to have deep conversations about the things that really matter to you with those people who really matter to you. You can find the blog on this topic here.

Active Listening

One major component of courageous conversation in relationships is the ability to use active listening skills when communicating. I get so many questions about what this actually means, so I thought it could be helpful to offer a bit more insight into what it is and how to use it. You can find the blog on this topic here.

Reacting vs. Responding

Did you know you can learn to pause and choose how you want to respond to things that happen in your life? It's a process to learn how to do this, but it can be such a powerful experience to not feel emotionally reactive to everything that happens.

We are often quite reactionary to things, and this is especially true in conversations when we want to make sure we are being heard. This is also true if we feel attacked and feel like we have to defend ourselves. In relationships, we are not always going to agree on everything or do everything the way our significant other would like. So how do we learn to communicate about things without creating combustible interactions?

Take some time to reflect back on the last argument you had with your spouse or partner: go deep and get honest with yourself. Were you reacting or responding? By learning what the difference is and by using the tools I talk about in my latest video, you can learn how to respond and in turn, build a healthy relationship and a healthy life.

Choose Your Response

The good news is you can learn to choose your responses rather than reacting emotionally. This is not to say that the emotion doesn't matter, but I teach my clients how to incorporate logic and emotion into their responses. The ability to control your reactions is a very important component of actively listening and using courageous conversation.

Part of learning to choose your response involves using my Relationship Communication Checklist. I went into more detail about this checklist in a recent blog post about how to use it. You can find that post here, and I’ve included the checklist below for you to get an idea of how it works.

The checklist is a way to slow down the reaction by asking yourself the following simple questions.

  1. Does it need to be said?

  2. Does it need to be said now?

  3. Does it need to be said by me?

Relationship Communication Workshop Updates

I have created an online Relationship Communication Workshop to help you dig into the communication struggles in your relationship and start getting things back on track. I have had a number of participants submit reviews and suggestions of different lessons that would be a great addition to the workshop. I want this to be as helpful as possible, so I have decided to listen to the feedback and expand the course to include even more relationship guidance.

There is an entire section that will be devoted to understanding even more about the love languages. I will also be providing you with more details into how to manage them in relationships.

I realize that not everyone wants to go through long-term therapy or the process of getting to a therapy appointment may not fit into your busy schedule. That's why I created this course. I wanted to provide you with a way to get access to the tools my clients get from me in my practice, but you can access the material from the comfort of your own home or wherever you are.

Download the FREE Relationship Communication Guide by clicking the button below, and you’ll be the first to know about the relaunch of my Relationship Communication Workshop!!!
