I Took a Break but I’m Back

I have been a bit MIA lately in terms of my online presence and so as I get back into the swing of doing my blog more regularly, I wanted to address what’s been going on and to talk a little bit about the importance of not only individual self care but how self-care plays a role in healthy relationship dynamics.

What is Real Self-Care?

A lot of times self-care is equated with self pampering, and I can totally be in support of self pampering but self-care includes more than just that.

Sometimes self-care is prioritizing your mental health in order to maintain your physical health. Sometimes self-care is taking care of some physical health struggles so that your mental health doesn’t suffer. It’s a balancing act, and it’s an ongoing process and a journey of optimizing this balance.

Self-care is vital, and not something that we should ignore or put off. Culture tells us that as women we have to do it all, that we can't take breaks without feeling guilty or that things will fall apart. But what happens when it's us falling apart. We need to learn how to listen to our bodies and be ok with taking a break.

My Recent Struggles

I have had some chronic autoimmune conditions develop throughout my life and at times they have gotten flared up for various reasons. A few months ago, I had an onset of some symptoms that really knocked me back and required me to prioritize taking care of my physical health.

I found that I was able to mostly get through my sessions with clients on a daily basis, but outside of that, I needed a lot of rest and time to recuperate.

Sometimes Self-Care Means Taking a Step Back

It would’ve been really easy for me to beat myself up and feel guilty that I wasn’t able to keep up with all my online content creating or to feel bad for not being able to contribute as much at home and in my relationship.

I had to give myself permission to prioritize my health over my work and from a relationship perspective, I had to trust in and rely on the same team mentality that my partner and I have worked so hard to create.

Creating a “Same Team” Relationship Mentality Is Relationship Self-Care

Maybe you can think about the creation of the same team mentality as a kind of relationship self-care. The same team mentality in your relationship also involves making the decision not to keep score.

For whatever reasons may come up, it’s not possible to also be completely equal in all responsibilities. Rather than holding it against one another, the relationship is a safe place to fall, it becomes easier to pick up the slack when your partner is struggling without developing resentment, frustration, or feeling disconnected from one another.

Creating a same team mentality takes honesty, authenticity, and courage. But your relationship will thank you and you and your partner will be stronger than ever.

Looking Forward to the Future

As I have been hitting this major reset button in my own life, I am looking forward to being able to dig deeper into some relationship best practices. Communication and learning how to balance individual needs within a relationship while also spending time cultivating a healthy relationship dynamic are all things that I’m going to be bringing you in the very near future.

Thank you for staying on this journey with me, and I look forward to seeing what comes next!

Relationship Communication Workshop Updates

I have created an online Relationship Communication Workshop to help you dig into the communication struggles in your relationship and start getting things back on track. I have had a number of participants submit reviews and suggestions of different lessons that would be a great addition to the workshop. I want this to be as helpful as possible, so I have decided to listen to the feedback and expand the course to include even more relationship guidance.

There is an entire section that will be devoted to understanding even more about the love languages. I will also be providing you with more details into how to manage them in relationships.

I realize that not everyone wants to go through long term therapy or the process of getting to a therapy appointment may not fit into your busy schedule. That's why I created this course. I wanted to provide you with a way to get access to the tools my clients get from me in my practice, but you can access the material from the comfort of your own home or wherever you are.
