Setting Different Types of Boundaries
We are kicking off a blog series all about boundaries, and I am looking forward to bringing you more details about each type. There is a lot to talk about with each one, so today I’m giving you an overview of the different types of boundaries you can set as well as a helpful analogy you can use when you start thinking of setting them in your life.
Types of Boundaries
Physical boundaries
Emotional boundaries
Intellectual boundaries
Sexual boundaries
Material boundaries
Money boundaries
Time boundaries
Boundaries are Like a Fence
When thinking of setting boundaries in your life and in your relationship, I want to share my fence analogy with you to help explain how boundaries function. Setting healthy boundaries is a way for you to love yourself and others well
In the following video, I give more detail about this analogy and I give you an overview of the seven different types of boundaries you can set in your life:
First, I want you to imagine building a chain link fence. Although it may offer a bit of a barrier, it really doesn’t offer a lot of privacy. It is pretty porous and can be easy for things to enter or exit your environment.
Next, I want you to imagine building a 10-foot concrete wall completely surrounding your emotional self. Yes, it does offer a lot of privacy, but it also cuts you off from connecting to the world around you. It doesn’t make it very easy for things to enter or exit your world.
Lastly, I want you to imagine building an 8-foot wooden privacy fence with a gate that locks. It offers a good deal of privacy from the world around you, and because there is a locked gate, it allows you to determine what does and does not get to enter your life.
Try to keep these ideas in mind as we discuss the different types of boundaries over the coming weeks, and think of what the 8-foot privacy fence looks like for you in each of the categories.
Setting boundaries allows you to freely be yourself, to love yourself and others, and still get the respect and treatment you deserve. To be authentically you, know what the 7 boundaries are, set them in your life, and hold firm to them.
Love Yourself Well
Boundaries allow you to safely interact with the people in your life. They allow you to love other people and yourself well. It is always OK to say, “no” without feeling guilty. You are the gatekeeper of your life, but this does not mean that everyone in your life will respond positively to you setting boundaries. If people are used to getting their way with you, they may act a bit hostile towards you when you start to push back as a way to protect yourself.
Just remember that when someone reacts negatively to you for setting a boundary, it does not mean you should not have set the boundary, but it does give you some insight into how they respect and regard you.
You are the gate-keeper to your life. You get to decide what comes in and what must stay out. You have the power and the right to say yes when you want to and when to say no when you want to....without feeling any guilt or shame. There are 7 different types of boundaries and I am going to teach you about each one.
Relationship Communication Workshop Updates
I have created an online Relationship Communication Workshop to help you dig into the communication struggles in your relationship and start getting things back on track. I have had a number of participants submit reviews and suggestions of different lessons that would be a great addition to the workshop. I want this to be as helpful as possible, so I have decided to listen to the feedback and expand the course to include even more relationship guidance.
There is an entire section that will be devoted to understanding even more about the love languages. I will also be providing you with more details into how to manage them in relationships.
I realize that not everyone wants to go through long-term therapy or the process of getting to a therapy appointment may not fit into your busy schedule. That's why I created this course. I wanted to provide you with a way to get access to the tools my clients get from me in my practice, but you can access the material from the comfort of your own home or wherever you are.
