Another major component of courageous conversation is the ability to develop and use the skill of empathy.

Empathy to Improve Communication
What is empathy?
Simply defined, empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. When engaged in communication with someone, the ability to put yourself in their shoes as a way of understanding where they are coming from from is the process of using empathy as part of healthy communication and a way to develop a healthy relationship.
Are empathy and sympathy the same thing?
No, these two things are not the same thing. Empathy is when you’re able to put yourself in another person’s shoes to understand their point of view. Sympathy is when you feel compassion, pity or sorry for another person who is struggling or hurting or going through a hard time. When communicating in your relationships there may be a time to feel sympathy for another person but empathy is an amazingly powerful tool that helps you connect with another person rather than keep them at a distance by feeling sorry for them. Empathy is the process of joining with someone on a personal level to make them feel heard.
Are you wanting to communicate better with your spouse or partner? Understanding and practicing active listening is a good place to start along with learning empathy in your relationship. 3 Types of Empathy
Cognitive - This is the type of empathy that is displayed by simply knowing how the other person is feeling and/or what they might be thinking or needing. This is very effective when trying to help offer someone some perspective through your intellectual understanding of what they are going through.
Emotional - This is the type of empathy that is displayed when you almost feel the emotions of another person. For example, this could be when you see someone else cry, and it makes you feel like crying.
Compassionate - This is the type of empathy that is displayed as a sort of combination of cognitive and emotional empathy. I like to think of this as the gold standard of empathy. When showing this type of empathy, you understand the other person’s feelings and you also feel it along with them.
Are you feeling disconnected with your spouse or partner? Are you wanting to get back to happy and healthy? Starting with the way you communicate with each other is important.
