Relationship Reset
Over the past few months, I’ve tried to give you an overview of a variety of ways to reset your relationship and start working to build the relationship of your dreams. It is possible to have a relationship that meets both of your needs and that is free from resentment and other toxicity that often creeps up and gets in the way. At the heart of everything, healthy communication is the key.
Healthy Communication is the Key
Over the past 15 years, I have spent countless hours working with couples and trying to understand relationships and what causes them to struggle, and also what helps them succeed. I can confidently tell you that the underlying key to everything is communication.
Healthy communication is the key but there are other elements that come into play. There is also the important aspect of comprehension that is needed for communication success. Communication without proper comprehension doesn’t get very far.
Ultimately once communication and comprehension are in place, the next step is figuring out a plan for how to best meet both of your needs and at least some of your wants. What I’m describing is the concept of creating a “same team” mentality with your partner, and it’s possible to start building your “same team” today.
Relationships are a two-way street and one where you are on the same team, finding ways to make things work for both of you and so everyone's needs are met. This can be a difficult place to get to, especially if you are used to fighting each other. Today I am going to walk you through what being on the same team means.
Creating a “Same Team” Mentality
A “same team” mentality simply means that you have a grounding way to reset with your partner any time things get off track or feel icky.
I have used this concept with my clients for many years, now and I want to share it with you too. I shared on my social media last month of what the “same team” mentality means to me and how I use it in my relationship. I remember presenting the concept to my partner early in our relationship, and it became a guide phrase we use as a central concept in our relationships.
We actually took the “same team” mentality to the next level and added an additional word in there. Once we decided to get married, the idea of “same team” turned into the “same f@#king team”, and we often abbreviate it as SFT. We even incorporated it into our wedding ceremony which led to the officiant and wedding coordinator sharing with me their own stories of what SFT means to them.
I shared some posts on social media about the wedding using #SFT, and I inadvertently created suspense around what #SFT means. As soon as I shared the explanation, a lot of people seemed to resonate with the idea. I have received so many amazing messages about this shows up for different people, and I am so excited to share this idea with you.
In the video below, I talk more about what it means to create a “same team” mentality, to a SFT reset in your own relationship.
A healthy relationship means two people who put in the work to find ways to make sure needs are met and communication and comprehension is coming from a same team mentality. Learn how to make this happen in my latest video.
Do You Have Your Own #SFT Story?
I know this concept is specific to each relationship, and I would love to hear your story if you’d be willing to share. You can leave a comment on this blog, connect with me on social media (links below), send me a direct email at lindsay@lindsaywalden.com or click here to send me a message.
I really appreciate you sharing with me what #SFT means to you and how it shows up in your relationship.
Relationship Communication Workshop Updates
I have created an online Relationship Communication Workshop to help you dig into the communication struggles in your relationship and start getting things back on track. I have had a number of participants submit reviews and suggestions of different lessons that would be a great addition to the workshop. I want this to be as helpful as possible, so I have decided to listen to the feedback and expand the course to include even more relationship guidance.
There is an entire section that will be devoted to understanding even more about the love languages. I will also be providing you with more details into how to manage them in relationships.
I realize that not everyone wants to go through long-term therapy or the process of getting to a therapy appointment may not fit into your busy schedule. That's why I created this course. I wanted to provide you with a way to get access to the tools my clients get from me in my practice, but you can access the material from the comfort of your own home or wherever you are.
