It's so common for us to just say what we want to say, in the moment, without thinking about our words, the setting, and the timing of it all. And too often, the result is not what we expected and feelings get hurt. With a deep breath and some awareness of the situation, you can turn it around and get to the heart of the matter and your relationship ends up stronger for it.
Timing is Everything
There is a time and a place to discuss difficult topics, and it’s often a better idea to schedule some time rather than just springing it on them when you think of what you want to say. The goal is to create a balanced conversation where both people can discuss their struggles, issues, or problems in a calm environment at a time that works for both people
Tips for Scheduling a Time to Talk
You want to come to the conversation in a fresh state of mind if possible
Lindsay’s Tip: Use the HALT method and ask yourself the following questions:
Am I hungry?
Am I angry?
Am I feeling lonely?
Am I tired?
If you said yes to any of those questions, then it’s probably not the best time to talk about deep important things.
Add the date and time to your calendar like you would any other appointment and do not break it or miss it unless absolutely necessary
By scheduling your conversation appointment on the calendar, you’re making your relationship communication a priority
Don’t treat it like it’s just a one and done type of thing
For optimum relationship communication success, you want to have ongoing conversation appointments.
When it's time for a deep conversation, one that may trigger strong emotions, it's best to make sure you have certain things in place first to ensure a healthy outcome. Check out what you can do before you start talking that will help you become a better communicator and a better partner.
Create Balanced Conversations
In preparation for a conversation appointment, I suggest you both jot down a few notes or bullet points you want to cover when you get to the appointment. Spend some thinking about what you want to say and how you want to say it. This also comes in handy if emotions get high. You will have some notes to refer to and you can make sure you are communicating what you intend to communicate.
Steps to Create Balanced Conversations
Take turns sharing your feelings with each other and refer to your notes if you get stuck
Be direct
Be specific
Be kind and respectful
Try to phrase things using an “I-statement” rather than a “you-statement”
If you need help with or examples of how to use “I-statements”, my FREE Relationship Communication Guide gives you a step-by-step process you can follow. Just click the button below to download your own copy of the guide.

Relationship Communication Workshop Updates
I have created an online Relationship Communication Workshop to help you dig into the communication struggles in your relationship and start getting things back on track. During the past month, I have had a number of participants submit reviews and suggestions of different lessons that would be a great addition to the workshop. I want this to be as helpful as possible, so I have decided to listen to the feedback and expand the course to include even more relationship guidance.
I realize that not everyone wants to go through long-term therapy or the process of getting to a therapy appointment may not fit into your busy schedule. That's why I created this course. I wanted to provide you with a way to get access to the tools my clients get from me in my practice, but you can access the material from the comfort of your own home or wherever you are.
