Q&A

I am also going to be using my weekly blog to answer some of the questions I’m receiving. If you can’t join the weekly Zoom support call, I’ll be recapping some of the highlights in my blogs as a way to help as much as I possible can.

Here are a few of the questions from last week’s support call.

  1. Why do I feel angry all the time? It seems like everything is setting me off, and I don’t know how to stop it.

Lindsay’s Answer: Anger is a considered to be a secondary emotion. This is not to invalidate what you’re feeling, but rather to explain that feelings of anger are usually masking other emotions beneath the surface. It is important to get in touch with the emotion(s) beneath the anger you’re feeling. There is an instinctual emotional reaction to the anger, but if you are willing to lean into it with curiosity, it may reveal the bigger picture of what you’re feeling.

  2. Even though I am sleeping more than normal, I never seem to get enough sleep and I’m constantly tired. Why is this?

Lindsay’s Answer: This could be happening for a number of reasons, but it’s most likely related to the concept of anticipatory grief that I talked about in a previous blog a few weeks ago. There is this feeling/awareness of the fact that things bad things are happening outside your control and and it leaves you with a feel of grief that is suspending in waiting. This time period is also potentially triggering a trauma response.

There are a lot of mixed ideas about how people should be spending this “downtime”. Although some people might feel super productive and want to get a lot of things done, there are other people that are going to feel like they need to recuperate and heal emotionally. Sometimes that healing means taking an extra nap or sleeping later in the day then ordinarily you would want to or even be able to.

  3. Do you have any tips on keeping a “normal” or regular schedule? My days feel like they are running together and I feel like I should be doing more or staying on task.

Lindsay’s Answer: There is not one right way to have a schedule during this time, but it is important to give yourself elements that you can look forward to during the day. This could be having a simple morning routine that you do every day regardless of what time you actually do get out of bed. It could also be having daily self-care such as taking a walk through your neighborhood or sitting on your front porch just to absorb some of the sunshine that’s available outside or to not feel quite so isolated inside your house.

I’m a huge proponent of having a morning and night routine as a way to keep your brain in the process of feeling like it’s being productive from day to day. For example, I have a client who has always wanted to be able to take a long nap during the day but have productive time before and after the nap. She is allowing herself to structure her day this way and is having a lot of success with this type of schedule. I have another client that does not do well if she does not have a work out every morning to start her day, so even though the work out might look different than it did previously, she still maintaining regularity every day as a way to keep her brain in check.
