The 4 Agreements

In last week’s blog, I introduced you Don Miguel Ruiz’s book, The 4 Agreements. Not only do I try to live by these agreements in my personal life, I use them in my practice to help my clients stay on the right track or reset when needed. They are simple agreements to make, but they are not necessarily easy to keep. These agreements are not meant to be used a way to judge one another or hold each other emotionally hostage, but rather they are intended to help create a foundation for success with yourself and in your relationships.

What are The 4 Agreements?

The 4 Agreements are listed below, and I will spending the next few blogs to dig deeper into each one to give you a better understanding of how to implement each one into your life. This blog will be looking at the first agreement, Be Impeccable with Your Word.

  • Be Impeccable with Your Word

  • Don’t Take Things Personally

  • Don’t Make Assumptions

  • Always Do Your Best

Be Impeccable with Your Word

To be impeccable means to act in accordance with the highest standards. When thinking about how this applies to how you use your words, here are some things to strive for.

  • Speak with Integrity

    • Integrity can be defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Spend some time reflecting on the words you use. Do you feel they are coming from a place of honesty? Are they in accordance with your own moral standards?

      • Lindsay’s tip: Please remember that there is not just one moral standard that everyone should ascribe to. I’m just asking you to spend time reflecting on whether your words meet your own standards.

  • Say only what you mean

    • Do you stop and think before you speak? When we feel reactive, we tend to say things without thinking or without slowing down to make sure the message we are sending matches our intended meaning. A few blog posts ago, I gave you my Relationship Checklist for communicating, and I think it applies to this idea so perfectly.

    • As a recap of my Relationship Checklist, you can check out the post here. I’ve included the 3 questions on this checklist below:

      • Does it need to be said?

      • Dose it need to be said now?

      • Does it need to be said by me?

  • Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others

    • I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all…” This is not to say that you should be able to discuss things that aren’t going the way you would like them to, but the words you choose to use to discuss those things need to be thought out and done in a constructive way rather than out of anger or to cause hurt in someone else.

  • Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love

    • When working to be impeccable with your words and making sure you aren’t using your words to gossip or hurt yourself or someone else, you are helping to craft your words in the direction of truth and love. Being impeccable doesn’t mean you can’t discuss issues or problems, but it helps you to pause and make sure you are discussing things in an effective and productive way rather than just being emotionally reactive.

So many disagreements, hurt feelings, misunderstandings and communication struggles can be drastically decreased by learning to implement this first agreement into your life. In my FREE Relationship Communication Guide, I give you practice examples of how to start communicating more effectively in your relationships. I do hope you’ll check it out!
